Thesis projects
Do you want to do your thesis work at a company at the forefront of antenna and RF technology?
We offer paid thesis projects with an allrounder experience of RF engineering based on your interests and predispositions. We believe that a good thesis project starts from a real and interesting research question but also offers hands-on experience. Depending on the topic, you can expect a good mix of design, manufacturing, measurement, and programming. You can do the project alone or in a group, and we will have experienced colleagues helping you along the way. At completion, you will receive a payment as a recognition for your hard work.
The topic of the thesis is typically defined together with the candidate, some suggested topics include:
- 140 GHz MLW antenna design:
Higher frequency means more data rate, so how can we push the frequency of our technology? You will be designing an MLW technology at D-band, targeting Radar application or going for high gain antennas in telecommunication.
- Automated anechoic chamber measurements:
At Gapwaves we have an inhouse anechoic chamber that we look to enhance and automate. You will learn about antenna measurement and have hands on experience with hardware, robotics and programming.
- Image based manufacturing verification:
To verify our antennas, we need to measure the dimension of our manufactured parts. At mmWave, even the smallest changes can make a difference. In this thesis, you will develop an automated tool to measure our parts based on HD images from our laboratory and estimate the dimensions down to micron level accuracy.
- Developing a root cause analysis tool
Finding 'most likely' causes for mismatch or radiation pattern characteristics in simulation vs. measurement. Developing a model-based parameter estimation to find problems in the antenna (potentially with algorithms such as MUSIC).
- Pattern shaping in plastic antennas
To have a better control over a radar's field of view, the radiation pattern of the antenna should be shaped. The structure of the metalized plastic antennas allows to add some mechanical features to engineer the radiating surface currents and shape the radar's coverage.
We also offer internships:
Patterns analysis tool development:
Measuring antennas is one thing, but how does that translate into performance. In this internship you will develop software tools to take our measurement data and extract the relevant metric to show how our prototypes are performing.
The application deadline is set for November 30th, 2024. Please be aware that this is a continuous recruitment process, and the position may be filled before the advertised closing date.
What you will join
At Gapwaves, we’re exploring what an antenna can do. How it can make a machine see the world and how it can connect people. We’re curious about what this will mean for the technology of tomorrow and how we can build a creative future where our imagination sets the limits, not the technology. We develop high-performance millimeter-wave antennas and antenna systems using gap waveguide technology. Gapwaves' focus markets are within the automotive industry and wireless communication.
Gapwaves strives to be an attractive employer offering stimulating roles in the forefront of new cutting-edge technology. We support and encourage skills development in order to ensure our employees and the company’s development.
Our team of ca 40 members represents a diverse range of nationalities. Gapwaves is headquartered in Gothenburg.
Your qualifications
Thesis projects are intended for students with a strong interest and background in antenna design, microwave engineering and physics with electromagnetic field theory. Additionally, good knowledge of programming in Python/Matlab is desirable.
